CSA stands for community-supported agriculture, “a model that connects the producer and consumers within the food system more closely by allowing the consumer to subscribe to the harvest of a certain farm or group of farms.”
Community-supported agriculture derives from a model pioneered by Booker T. Whatley, a professor of agriculture at Tuskegee University in Alabama in the 1960s.
At Crooked Farmz our CSA subscription model allows us to farm and cultivate microbes to be delivered to you as a series of four freshly-made compost teas to boost your overall soil health and plant health over the course of a summer.
As a subscriber you can help develop an infrastructure for ensuring that microbes beneficial to soil health are readily available in a freshly-brewed form to local consumers throughout the summer.
The Crooked Farmz CSA Model
Compost tea is a brewed liquid soil amendment made from fresh organic compost matter. It is thriving with millions of the microbes that do the heavy work of making organic and mineral matter in your soil available to the roots of your plant. And a healthy, living soil helps reduce dependence on chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
But because it is a freshly-made product it is perishable as well. And so our CSA subscription service is an attempt to meet with you on a monthly basis so that a freshly-made compost tea is freshly-delivered to your gardens and growing spaces.
Our FarmTranz 2025 timetable and calendar system is meant to help you coordinate with our movements throughout the summer so you know where and when to find us for a fresh compost tea connection.
FarmTranz routes offer coverage throughout our home area of East York, across Toronto/GTA, and into the Greenbelt — with stops along the way featuring rural farm stores, plant nurseries, backyard farms, urban homesteads, garden clubs, and more. These are the places you can make your connection.
